The important rule of thumb for the Columbia: while the currents are in your favor, the afternoon winds can be an invisible hand that holds you in place. You need to get up early and paddle until you take out at your next site right after lunchtime. The beauty of a Columbia paddle is breathtaking and we can have fantastic shoreside support, even to the point of carrying all our food and gear!
