Minutes

April Crew meeting minutes:

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 by President Sam G.  Venturers in attendance were: Mason W., Forrest D., Sam G., Mick K., Trevor N.  Excused were Nat W. and Jeanette M.

The first item that took place was the presentation of our Journey to Excellence Gold Award by Bob W.  The ribbon was given to our Crew Advisor and our President.

Old Business

  • WRVYC: Those who went were Trevor N., Chris Z., Jeanette M. and Scott M.
  • We got to see our own Zach F. be appointed as the VP of Communications for the Western Region.

New Business

  • Superactivity (Kayaking the Puget Sound) Trip: June 24th-29th. Cost is $150 approximately, not including the cost of kayak rentals. A long discussion about rental costs and price breaks took place. There were serious concerns raised about how many are going, and Sam will be assigning each executive board member who is going some Venturers to call to get an accurate head count.
  • Without enough participants, the trip is in danger of not occurring. the Superactivity Committee had prepared a flyer about the trip that was given to everyone in attendance. You must sign up before May 26th, which happens to be the day of the warm up at Wildcat Lake, where our wonderful crew Advisor will feed with a BBQ for everyone who goes to that day’s activity. Although up in the air, there might be an overnight in Gamble Bay on June 8th as another warm up.
  • Memorial Day Service: We need a minimum of 4 Venturers for a color guard held at Kvelstad Pavilion in Poulsbo on 5/27 from 11AM to 1PM for the North Kitsap VFW. It is co-hosted by our chartered organization, the American Legion Post 245. The more we have the more flags we can carry, including our own. There will be food. There was no chair specified, so Sam is your contact point.
  • Band Bronze Award: Several months ago, the Crew voted to adopt an outline for the band bronze award. We have to get this completed before the rules change if we want to have our members earn the award. We will hold this after the Memorial Day service and you might want to look over the requirements, which are posted on our website under documents. Jeanette has already been starting some planning for this event.
  • Food Drive: We have been contacted by Poulsbo Fishline food bank. They need help sorting and unloading food from the Postal Carriers food drive on May 11th. They have slots from 12-2PM, 1:30-3:30PM, and 3:30-5:30PM. They want help at the 3:30 slot the most. Show up, in uniform, if you want to help. There is no event chair.
  • Bike Trip: 6/1 is the potential rescheduled date. Someone will have to take over as the navigator at the activity as the Activity Chair will not be able to attend on that day. 6/8 is an option with the same activity chair. Rush in and grab this opportunity to lead a fun day: Let Sam know.

Next Meeting: May 30th, same place, same time…

March Crew meeting minutes:

Old Business

  • Scouting for food (Part 1): We went around Lofall and put up signs for people for Scouting for food.

New Business

  • Scouting for food (Part 2): We will meet up at Walmart on 3/30 @ 9AM to collect the food.
  • Bike trip: Olympic Discovery trail on 4/6. Activity Chair is Trevor N. We will meet at 8AM at the Poulsbo Walmart and the Zanteks will be providing transportation of the bikes on the Kitsap county side of the Hood Canal Bridge. Mr. Golden will be (according to Sam G.) be giving rides to Trevor N. and Sam G. as well as bike transportation for the Jefferson side. Lunches will be brought or purchased in PA.
  • Band Bronze: Most likely a weekend. Date and location TBA. Location may potentially be Masonic Lodge in Port Gamble.
  • Western Region Venturing Youth Conference: 4/19 through 4/21. Sam G sent out the details through our mailing list.
  • COPE @ Camp Pigott: 5/4 and $25 per person.

December Cabinet meeting minutes:

Rafting trip: We will have a $150 non-refundable deposit due by the January meeting. We will also need to do a swim test as well before then but a long discussion about who might be required to do it and how to get college students and adults included took place. Mr. Murphy was going to look at the guide to safe scouting and get back to the crew. The trip will now be taking place on June 30th- July 6th. There are about 34 people on the list, but out of crew people should get taken off first.

Philmont 2014: The dates conflict with Band Camp. There are several people who can consult with us about a change but it may be possible. June and July would definitely be better weather wise. However, this will be a non-refundable deposit but substitutions could be made. Openings for changes will probably happen in early March as they need a check sent to Philmont by February 28, 2013. We will discuss more at the January meeting but hopefully Jeff or Mr. Z can get the inside scoop on a change to allow band members to participate.

Ethical Controversies: Chris Z and Bob Taylor are chairing this event. It will take place on the same day as the Parent’s Parlay on 1/19 at 1:00PM at the same location as the Merit Badge Clinic which is an LDS church in Silverdale.

Winter Challenge: Those who went to the last one said “NO” very firmly, but there will be a vote at the January meeting.

Klondike Derby: We as a cabinet decided that we should staff the event, but there will be a vote. This should be the weekend of February 8-10, but we may just staff one day. Mr. Murphy will be there as well.

WRV Conference: The only reason to go would be networking, but the general consensus was no contingent would be sent.

Music and Theater Bronze: We as a cabinet being primarily in band, we motioned and approved of these requirements. Mr. Z will probably be the best to send these to the crew.

A discussion about the need for a quartermaster occurred. It was motioned and approved starting a non-cabinet level position for this and the Crew President was going to approach Forrest about accepting the position.

October Minutes

The first thing we did was confirm Leadership Positions.

We then discussed transportation to the awards ceremony at the Fall Rendezvous, as well as the Veterans Day Service and the King Tut Exhibit.

We also watched a video on Youth Protection Training, and had discussions about it afterwards.

Last, but not least, we as a crew talked about the potential changes to the Venturing program.

September Minutes

A Crew Review was conducted for Chris Z's Venturing Gold Award.

Elections were held.  Sam G will be our President for 2012-2013.  Trevor N will be Vice President of Communications.  Nat W will be Vice President of Finance.  There were no nominations for Vice President of Administration or Program, which will be handled by Sam G for the interim.

August Minutes

We had a very successful day at the Karrens on Saturday and a great BBQ.   Thank you, Karren Family, for your outstanding hospitality!

We managed to introduce a few changes to the Crew ByLaws, which will be voted upon at the September business meeting

Determining the 2013 Superactivity/Kodiak Challenge was, well, challenging but fun.  We brainstormed for almost a half-hour, exhausting everyone’s ideas, both youth and adult, and then multivoted until we had three remaining events, which were then finally voted to a priorized order.  We wanted to avoid any conflict with the National Jamboree dates of July 15-24.  We felt so strongly about the three final event candidates, that we decided to place ALL THREE on the calendar.  A small committee of youth for each event will plan the details.

In June 2013, we will assemble a 4-5 day Cycling Trip to the San Juan Islands.  There is no minimum or maximum to the number who can go.  Costs will be kept to a mimimum, targeting under $150.

In July 2013, we will travel to White Bird, Idaho and raft the Salmon River to the confluence of the Salmon and Snake Rivers.  We will then board a jet boat and ride through Hell’s Canyon back to White Bird.  Counting the full day’s drive at the beginning and end, this will be a 7 day event and should cost $600 each.  If we can assemble a maximum of 25 people, the cost can be reduced to $550 or less.  There is a minimum of 10 required.   We will leave very early on Sunday, June 30th and return late on Saturday, July 6th.

In August 2013, and not to conflict with various band camps, we will kayak the Columbia River from west of Bonneville Dam to the sea, or as far as we can make it.  The total distance could be 146 mles, but we will plan for morning-only paddling to avoid afternoon winds, and calculate for tidal current effects on the river if and when we pass Longview.   This will be a 6 or 7 day trip and costs will be kept to a minimum, targeting under $250.

For the remainder of the year, starting very soon, the Crew decided on the following mini-events.  Some dates are generalized, some specific.  All we be posted on the Crew calendar by the new VP Comms after the September elections.
