It's the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Yes, it's Veterans Day, a federal holiday that was first known as Armistice Day and marked the end of the Great War (WWI) and renamed and expanded in 1954 by the American Congress to honor the service of all veterans. In Washington State, the largest event is the one held at the giant Sunlink Pavilion at the Kitsap County Fairgounds. Attendance this year was around 1,500. Crew 42 has attended every year since the event was founded, and serves as VIP escorts for the many dignitaries, elected officials, senior military officers, and special guests....rubbing elbows with Admirals, County Commissioners and City Mayors, the County Sheriff, Pearl Harbor survivors, etc. Among this year's guests were American veterans who had been held as Prisoners of War in Germany, the South Pacific, and Vietnam. The keynote speaker was a six-year prisoner in the infamous Hanoi Hilton....and who was a Scout as a youth. Our chartering organization, Poulsbo Post 245 of the American Legion, was also at the Pavilion today and was pleased to have Venturers Brody, Nick, Mick, Sam, Jake, and Dante tending to their duties in behalf of the Crew.

Three of Crew 42's officers were nominated by the Chief Seattle Council and selected by the BSA National Court of Honor to be inducted into the new National Youth Leadership Society. Jake K and Brody H were presented with their award at a recent Council meeting in downtown Seattle. Jeff Z was also chosen, but was unable to attend the ceremony while away at college.
To be eligible for the Society, a Venturer has to accumulate a significant resume of leadership, both within and outside BSA. A candidate must complete several training courses, including a Troop Leadership course and/or Venturing Leadership Skills Course, the weeklong National Youth Leadership Training, complete a Kodiak leadership trek, and finish a Kodiak X course. Options include the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience at Philmont Scout Ranch and the new Mentoring Tomorrow's Leaders course. Staffing any of these courses brings extra consideration.
A candidate must then successfully serve in a series of leadership positions in a BSA unit. Consideration is given to Patrol Leader or Senior Patrol Leader in a Boy Scout Troop, and any of the Officer cabinet positions in a Venturing Crew. Additionally, they must serve in leadership positions outside of Scouting in school, church, or community. This can include sports teams, community service clubs, religious organizations, and educational duties in a position of demonstrated responsibility.
The Society will be celebrating its second anniversary and fewer than 25 Venturers nationwide have been selected. Jake, Brody, and Jeff are the first three in the Chief Seattle Council. |

Congratulations to Ryan O, the 12th of Crew 1042's Venturers to be awarded his Eagle Scout rank. Among the youngest Eagles in age, Ryan has a robust and adventurous tenure that includes staffing at Wood Badge last year as well as serving this past summer at Camp Pigott as a certified COPE instructor. COPE is an acronym for Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience. Also known as a Ropes Course, it is a challenging outdoor personal development and team building activity which usually consists of high and/or low elements. Low elements take place on the ground or only a few feet above the ground. High elements are usually constructed in trees or made of utility poles and require a belay for safety. COPE teaches teamwork, communication, trust, leadership, decision making, problem solving, and self-esteem.
Ryan's father Tom and older brother Adam (also a veteran of the Crew) are both Eagles. All are co-registered with Crew 1563 in Kingston, chartered by their church. Welcome to the nest! |
