The Venturing Corps of Discovery is a grassroots movement to form a service society within Venturing for Venturing.  Members are Venturers and adults who have shown a willingness to promote Venturing at Council and District events, within their communities or within their religious organizations.  The organization is modeled after the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803. In 2005, a pocket flap patch depicting Lewis and Clark overlooking the Missouri River in Central Montana was commissioned. Several hundred of these pocket flaps have been distributed across the USA.

The idea behind the Corps of Discovery is to promote the Venturing program and to encourage Venturers to get out and find creative ways to bring postive attention to the program.  When we hold induction ceremonies, we have the Venturers stand up, individually, and tell what projects or activities they plan to do.  Things like helping with VOA, working Powderhorns, Wood Badges, and Kodiak treks have come up.  Volunteering at the Council or District level, or building a website have been pledged.   Volunteering to staff a Scout Camporee, or working as a Den Chief would work, too.  For more information regarding the Corps of Discovery, see the link.

Fourteen intrepid kayakers spent Memorial Day weekend on Port Gamble Bay up at the north end of the Kitsap Peninsula.  This was our last shakedown in preparation for our trek into Desolation Sound Provincial Park in British Columbia at the end of June.  For this weekend, it was the opportunity to practice packing our boats with all the respective gear we will need for the longer voyage.  Learning to paddle a group takes a little practice, and everyone gets to work on their 'cadence' as they paddle.  It didn't take very long after we first set out before we were scattered over a 1/4 mile from front to back, so we stopped, rafted up, and then worked on staying in pairs or trios with some of the newer paddlers in front and the more experienced folks in the back or sweep positions.  Progress was notable after that change.

The Crew got a special opportunity to staff the Northwest Adventure Sports Expo 2011 in Port Gamble.  The north end of the Kitsap Peninsula is woods with an extensive trail system, and the old lumber mill town & port now serve as a wonderful home for sea kayaking and outdoor recreation.  This was the 2nd annual Expo, with race competitors from all over the NW, along with adventure-based vendors nationwide.  The heart of the Expo, though, are four competitive events for the rugged.

Congratulations to Zack, who earned his Venturing Outdoor Bronze Award and was recognized at the April meeting.  To qualify for the Outdoor Bronze, a Venturer must complete four of the eight Core requirements and two of the eighteen elective requirements toward the Ranger Award.  For his Core requirements, Zack chose Standard First Aid, Leave No Trace principles, Land Navigation, and Conservation.  His electives were Backpacking and Physical Fitness.  You can find those requirements listed on line here.  Zack, a junior at North Kitsap High, is a member of his school's Band, as well as the Soccer and Tennis teams.  He's trekked across Philmont Scout Ranch, and is the Crew's current President.  He will attend Evergreen Boys State in June and was selected as Washington's Eagle Scout of the Year.  Zack's is the 11th Bronze Award in the Crew.
