It looks like once is not enough. While many Venturing Crews may never get the chance, Crew 42 appears to be getting an encore. Wood Badge is the advanced training course for adults in Scouting, and we were invited to serve on staff in the Fall of 2008. During that course at Camp Parsons in Brinnon, the Crew lead the inter-Patrol Challenges (teamwork games), showed the adults how to properly set up a backpacking camp site, explained the principles of Leave No Trace, and integrated 2 Venturers into each of the 8 Wood Badge patrols. The Crew also audited the Patrol projects, which were timed presentations by the adults on many different subjects on how Scouting is run in the USA. Did we mention that Parsons is the oldest Scout Camp west of the Mississippi and has an extremely rich history that dates back to 1919? We felt we prepped hard and gave it a pretty good shot, and it appears we did. Last week, we were contacted by the leaders of the Spring 2010 Wood Badge course and invited to staff the Centennial Course, marking the Boy Scouts of America's 100th Anniversary. Not too shabby, eh?

The Council recently announced that Crew 1042 achieved the 2009 Centennial Quality Unit Award, and was the first to complete it in Kitsap County. This is our 4th CQUA recognition in 4 years! To earn the award, the Crew completed a 100% training level for all registered adults, retained and recruited more youth, earned personal awards for Venturers, and had a vibrant outdoor program as well as community service. Congratulations to everyone associated with the Crew, who may now wear the 2009 CQUA patch on their uniform sleeve.
By earning the CQUA for each of the three years leading up to the 2010 BSA Centennial, a unit can qualify for the 2010 Centennial Honor Award. As one of the few Scouting units and the ONLY Venturing Crew in Kitsap County with Quality Unit awards for 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, our Crew is meeting its training, service, activities, and program goals. W00t! |

Congrats are in order for those Venturers from the Crew who served at the Kitsap County Veterans Day gathering at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion on November 11th. Over 1,000 people attended, and we provided the VIP escorts to the guest speakers, senior officers, elected officials, and distinguished guests. It was a good day to be in Venturing Green! Take a look at the Photo Album for examples.

The morning of All Saints Day 2009 was cool, foggy....and surprisingly loud. We spent the morning with Bremerton Brigade, a group of Mountain Man aficionados, at the Poulsbo Sportsman's Club. The Crew learned to load and fire all sorts of blackpowder weapons, including longrifles, muskets, and pistols. Blackpowder is just sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate, and the term refers to the difference between the gunpowder used prior to the late 19th Century and the newer smokeless formulas. Firearms have evolved remarkably since the days of the Mountain Men, but the newer gunpowders require much more precise measuring than the older powders and weapons. The "rounds" of blackpower firearms are just that....round balls, unlike the bullets of the 20th Century and later. It takes a lot of talent and practice to deliver your "round" on target, reload, and be ready to fire again. Because of that slow reloading sequence, you learn to become accurate. In addition to firearms, the Crew learned to throw tomahawks and knives. It's not easy until you learn how, and then it's still not easy! |
